In this dialogue, Socrates was chating with Glaucon on the consequences of the replacement of a plant-based diet by a meat-based diet preferred by Glaucon. Socrates was explaining that a diet of barley, wheat, olives, figs, beans, myrtle berries, beech nuts and wine in moderation were all conducive the health contentement while an animal diet would lead to diseases, a sickness industry, legal strife and tension etc. Glaucon prefered to argue that the sacrifice of animals on the altar of human food was the way to go.
